Edited by Oscar Levy · translated by Anthony M. Ludovici · Doubleday, Page & Co., 1921
Letter to his mother · Sils-Maria, 24 August 1881
Passage: Letter to his mother · paragraph beginning “(In Genoa I live”
Timing & context
“Every morning” establishes recurrence and 05:00 is explicit. The five to seven hours refer to daily exercise, not the washing duration.
Meals, a cold wash, evening rest, and five to seven hours of daily exercise, reported in August 1881. Walking time is shown as an estimated daily allocation.
The routine Nietzsche reports in his letter of 24 August 1881, during his stay in Sils-Maria. The letter describes repeated habits, not only the day it was written.
